A water dryad with light silver hair and crystal blue wings sat upon
a lily pad, weeping softly .A fire nymph with orange-red eyes and
dusk-colored hair, named Inferno, soared up and began to
comfort her.
“Brook, what’s wrong?” he asked, quickly drying her tears.
She mumbles something hard to make out, but something he
understands nonetheless.
“Why, those earth pixies have a lot of nerve, saying that just
because you and your parents are the only water dryads in the
town.” he said angrily.
“I’m okay now.” she whispered, giving him a watery smile and
looking at him with her big sapphire-colored eyes. “Really, I’m
fine. Besides, shouldn’t you get back and help your mom make
sparks? It’s your turn today.” she said playfully.
At the mention of chores he made a face and flew off, calling, “I’ll
be back as soon as I can!”
Brook sat there for a few minutes longer, mentally reprimanding
herself for letting those childish, ridiculous little pixies get to her and
for thinking about how handsome her friend looked. Then, she
gathered herself and went back into town. In town, it seemed
every pixie was out shopping and trading for presents to give each
other for the Appreciating Festival.
This is a holiday were others give presents to show how
much they appreciated one another. There were only two
rules. One: It had to be a thoughtful gift. Two: It had to show
how much you valued the one you were giving it to.
Brook wandered the stores, looking for something to give to
Inferno. “Maybe I can get him leashes for his 4 brothers and
sisters!” she thought, stifling a giggle. On her way out of
CMN (cool male nymphs), she met up with her mom.
“Hi Mom! Did you find anything for Dad?” she inquired.
“Yes I did.” she answered as she pulled out a pair of slippers
for her husband.
“Oh, mom, he will love those! He’s been complaining that his
feet hurt when he walks on the wood.” she said happily.
Then, bringing her voice down low, she asked worriedly,
“Mom, what should I get Inferno?”
Mrs. Bubble, knowing perfectly well how her daughter felt
about her friend, replied, “Something you give him from the
heart.” Suddenly she got an idea. She started running,
wondering if the store she needed was still open…
“Hello Mr. Hue, I am looking for a wooden board shaped
like a heart and orange, red, black and yellow paint.” she
panted, out of breath from running so hard.
“And who might this be for?” he said teasingly.
“Um…well… you see…” she stammered as she blushed a
vivid scarlet.
“I’m only joking with you!” he chortled.
As she purchased her things and left the store, she wondered
if Inferno would like his gift. Meanwhile, Inferno sat on the
edge of the firewood they used to gather the sparks a fire
nymph’s wings made when rubbed together very fast. It was
an easy task and let him have some time to think.
“Should I give her a silver locket to match her hair or a glass
bottle filled with purified water mixed with some sweet
smelling herbs? What if I filled the locket with a bit of thyme,
her favorite herb? Yes, that’s perfect!” Now that he had
found her gift, he relaxed.
The next day, Inferno went to the jewelers and asked the price
of a silver heart-shaped locket.
