A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Your
Wedding is a story about allowing God to carry our
burdens. Giving it all away to Him. Trusting in Him.
When this story opens the heroine, Kari Montgomery,
has experienced a lot of loss: loss of her parents, her
engagement, and even her cousin who had gotten
married and moved away. In comes Randy Steele who
seems to have all the joy in his life that she lacks (even
though he too has some issues to deal with). He shows
her how to smile again and that she needs to find real
joy in God by giving away her troubles to Him. This is a
story with laugher and humor but also a lot of heart and
soul.
What motivated you to start writing in this genre?
I love reading Inspirational. I always have. My greatest
motivation really was because I wanted something to
read. My original intention had nothing to do with
publication. This is the genre that many of my friends
and relatives read and so I am glad to publish
something they all are so excited to read.
Do your fans' comments and letters influence you
in any way?
Very much so! I have to say now that I am published in
this genre that I take it seriously. I have received so
many reader comments and emails explaining how my
Inspirational has just reached home and touched so
many of them. It has made me realize that as
Inspirational authors, it is not just about momentary
entertainment but also life-long change. I have also
been asked to write a sequel and I am seriously
considering it.
Would you like to write a different genre than you
do now, or sub-genre?
I write in many genres (Contemporary, Suspense,
Historical, Inspirational, and Young Adult). The one I
would like to try one day that I have yet to attempt is
Fantasy. I read a lot of fantasy in my youth and I would
like to get back to it one day. I have this idea of a Robin
Hood-like character in mind. :D
Please tell us about yourself (family, hobbies,
education, etc.)
I am married and have two boys ages 9 and 3. I am
the oldest of five children and I am very close to my
family. I grew up and lived all my life in California
but a couple years ago we decided to move to
North Carolina because that is where the rest of my
family had moved. I have a degree in history and
have begun my Masters in history. I taught Jr. High
for several years before deciding to stay home with
my own children when my youngest was born. Now I
spend my days homeschooling my boys and
writing. I also engage in reading, watching Period
Drama movies, photography, scrapbooking, and
working with the youth at church.
Who are some of your other favorite authors
to read?
I love reading Regency and Victorian-era authors
such as Jane Austen and Elizabeth Gaskell. I still
enjoy reading Grace Livingstone Hill (which were
my first romances) and also L.M. Montgomery. My
favorite modern authors are Lori Wick, Bodie
Thoene, John Grisham, Nicholas Sparks, and Mary
Higgins Clark.
If you weren't writing, what would you be
doing?
If I wasn’t writing, I would be teaching again. I really
miss it and I do intend to return to it one day,
maybe within the next couple years. I do feel called
to work with young teens; it is a real burden on my
heart. But for the time being I know the Lord has
me home with my children and writing.
Are there any words of encouragement for
unpublished writers?
My encouragement to unpublished writers is to
persevere and to continue to write! Learn all you
can about the craft of writing, read in the genre(s)
you intend to write in, and write, write, write.
